February sealing helps homeowners dodge drafts

February is a good time to tackle a few simple projects to keep warm air inside your home while preventing cold drafts from seeping through.

It requires minimal time, tools and materials, and even if the groundhog brings an early spring, you will be ready for next winter!

Start by identifying drafty areas. Common culprits include gaps around windows and doors. Less obvious leak sources include holes for pipes and cables and electrical outlets on exterior walls.

Even the slightest draft can be found by holding a lighted candle to watch for any flickering or movement of the smoke. Once you've found the sources, clean the area and apply a continuous bead of caulk along the crack or gap. Smooth with a damp finger or tool for a tight seal. For larger gaps, foam sealants are a great alternative.

For doors and windows, add weatherstripping. Measure the perimeter of doors and windows and cut the weatherstripping to fit. Press firmly onto the frame. Some types have adhesive backing, while others may require nails or screws. Make sure the seal is tight without hindering functionality.

Finally, install door sweeps or draft stoppers at the bottoms of doors. A door sweep attaches permanently to the bottom of the door, preventing air from flowing underneath. Draft stoppers are temporary and can be easily moved when needed.
