DIY fire pit is a summer gathering hotspot

For the unofficial Memorial Day weekend kickoff to the summer season, nothing beats the warmth of gathering around a crackling fire – cooking, roasting marshmallows, swapping stories, or simply enjoying the flicker of flames under the stars.

With a little time and effort, a safe and affordable fire pit can be added in any backyard. Check local ordinances first. Some areas have burn restrictions or may require a permit. Those in homeowners associations should check the HOA covenants and bylaws for fire regulations.

Consider location carefully. It should be a flat, open space at least 10–15 feet away from flammable structures or vegetation. Clear the area of grass and debris and mark out a ring about 3 to 4 feet in diameter. A short rope tied to a central stake makes a great compass to make the circle perfect.

For supplies, DIYers should gather about a yard of gravel or lava rocks for the base, a bag of sand, and an optional metal fire ring insert. The main building materials are 30–40 non-flammable blocks of your choice. Retaining wall blocks for landscaping work well because they interlock to stack easily. Concrete pavers are heavy duty and widely available at home improvement stores. Many home stores also sell specialized “fire bricks.”

To get started on construction, dig down 6 to 8 inches within the entire circle. Fill the bottom with 2 to 3 inches of gravel for drainage, then add a layer of sand. Tamp down the sand and begin laying the blocks around the circle, making sure to level them along the way. Stagger layers for added stability (use mortar or other construction adhesive between layers if desired). Install the optional ring inside the circle and fill the center with more gravel or lava rocks.

Once the fire pit is complete, give it a day to settle. When lighting a fire, always keep a bucket of water or hose nearby for safety. Never leave a fire unattended. With minimal upkeep, a fire pit will be a favorite gathering hotspot for family and friends.
