Is it time for the kids to have their own rooms?

Does your growing family need a few more bedrooms? Here are some things to consider:

  • Sleep Schedule

If your children are on drastically different sleep schedules, sharing a bedroom can make it difficult to get a good night’s rest. If your teenager stays up way past your 10-year-old’s bedtime, they should probably have separate rooms.

  • Boys and Girls

By law in many states and as recommended by child development professionals, opposite gender siblings should not share a bedroom past a certain age. Although gender awareness begins in children around year 3, social separation doesn’t typically set in until 6 or 7. If you notice one or both of your children locking the door to the bathroom or asking for privacy when changing, it’s probably time to separate them.

  • Physical Space

As children grow and develop interests, the amount of physical space they require to feel comfortable and to store their personal items increases. If the shared bedroom doesn’t have the capacity to house both children and all their stuff, separate rooms are probably a good idea.

  • Personal Space

Teenagers tend to be better when they have their own personal space where they can get away from younger siblings, parents and the pressures of teen life. A separate bedroom and a little autonomy over how that room is decorated and kept can go a long way in helping your child transition from childhood to adult life.
